The Sierra Club on Wednesday called on producers of livestock in California to immediately phase out the practice of exporting birds. It said the practice was costing American ranchers and feed suppliers billions of dollars and could be contributing to a spike in the number of endangered red-winged blackbirds that are in crisis.

"With the U.S. market's reliance on live exports of endangered species, producers are finding it very difficult to meet consumer demands for higher quality feed at a time when consumers are demanding greater choice and more choices for their food and drinking water," said Sierra Club's national director, Melinda Pendleton. "The Sierra Club's call for a ban on live exports of live birds to California is an important first step in ensuring that ranchers and feed producers have the knowledge to responsibly manage that trade while protecting California's most precious biodiversity. We will continue to advocate for comprehensive and coordinated solutions to protect California's abundant birds and our food resources for future generations."

But the American Livestock Association in San Antonio said producers must take a "serious look" at the problem and "be mindful of a shift in consumer behavior."
